"You are a king by your own fireside as much as any monarch in this throne" – Miguel De Cervantes
With all the anticipation of the upcoming Great Gatsby film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, House of Thrones wants to show you how you can implement the luxurious styling of the 1920’s into your home. There is no doubt that this upcoming film will play a major role in influencing fashion and home decor style. The director, Baz Luhrmann, is known for his visual story telling through the use elaborate set design and wardrobing. Set in the roaring twenties, the styling and home decor trends of the time reflect an era of economic prosperity and the on set of the “Art Deco” period.
The Art Deco period is one that has been characterized by luxurious goods and glamorous lifestyles. Starting in France, this type of design reached its height of popularity during the 1920’s and 30’s, diminishing after World War II. Featuring bold colors, unique geometric shapes and lavish, ornate detailing, this period in design is one that served as a rebellion to the stuffy, formalities of the previous Victorian era.
1920’s design is one that showcased the economic boom of the decade, before the thought of the Great Depression. Stylish and elaborate, much of this look is woven together with mirrored furniture, tufted sofas in luxurious fabrics and brass and gold colored accents. It was a time where the wealthy flaunted their riches by building elaborate estates and decorating them with the finest things. Set in the rich playground of 1920’s Long Island, New York, Great Gatsby author F. Scot Fitzgerald was influenced by the “new money” attitudes of the locals and the elaborate architecture of nearby Oheka Castle and Beacon Tower estates served as inspiration for Jay Gatsby’s abode.
As you can imagine, if Jay Gatsby was to reside in a home such as these, he must be very wealthy and have a great decorating team. These two American “castles”also served as inspiration to the director and set designers of the upcoming film and it is almost guaranteed the interior sets will be garnished by beautiful period decor. Here are some examples of what we think you’d find in the Gatsby home:
The decadent detailing of these pieces tie in perfectly with the lavish lifestyle of Gatsby and are definitely ones that can be incorporated into your home to add that element of luxury. Stay tuned for our Gatsby themed inspire board coming soon.
